So my question for you is, how do you ask a complete stranger if a car in their yard is for sale?
Without creeping them out. If anyone remembers I almost bought that 1973 Mercedes 240 C, but then reality kicked me in the dick. I can't afford parts and labor for a vintage Mercedes, what was I thinking. So now I have moved on to an unknown year first gen Toyota MR2. It's been sitting in this old lady's yard for years, uncovered. She lives right down the street and I see her all the time. She seems like a car person because she also has an E32 750iL and a silver Volvo V70 R. She looks like a total bad ass in that car. So, should I knock on the front door and ask or leave a note with my contacts on her gate? I really don't want to freak her out she is very, very old. I don't know what's wrong with the MR2, if it runs or whats up. But i love it.
I keep on having this daydream of me asking and she say's, if you tow it you can have it.

You knock their door and ask them if they are selling their car or if they'd accept x amount of cash for their car. Not that hard.

Show up shirtless and you should do fine.

"Pardon me Good Sir/Madam, but may I inquire as to the potential sale of your magnificent vehicle?"
Or, just leave a note.
"If you ever want to sell your MR2, I'd like to know. Thanks.
[you contact info]"

I wouldn't just ask her like that. If you see her, you should just talk about the car, like "how long have you had it" or random questions like that. Then maybe eventually she'd know you're a big fan of her collection and would ask you?

I'd just open with "That's an awesome MR2 out there. Does it run?" and go from there.

write down your contact info, go to her, ask nicely if she would like to sell. if not, thank her and ask if she will take your note in case she changes her mind later .

Yep, it's just like asking a girl out, but without the chloroform and the blindfolds.

Get the address and then start sending nasty and obscene letters to her. At the bottom each tell her this will stop if she agrees to sell the MR2. Be polite and include your contact info. :)

Write a note on a piece of paper (waterproof ink on white light cardboard would be best) with your question and contact information, leave it under the windshield wiper. If the owner's interested in selling, he or she will contact you, and if not, they will just toss the note.

Face to face is always better. Just start off your conversation telling her your admiration for it and work the "is it for sale or would you consider selling it" into the conversation.

Back in the 90s, a gentler and simpler time, my dad bought a few old cars simply by knocking on the door. He asked about several more and was unable to buy, but was never cussed out or otherwise menaced. Usually started by saying something along the lines of "neat old car, I had something like it once, what's the story behind it?" The 60 Ford Country Sedan he picked up for $300-400 (just needed a coil and it ran fine) was the best of the bunch.
